Crappie Artificial Bait Guidelines – Secrets of Crappie Fishing 4

In-fact, you may never use live bait again. Please refer to the guidelines below these are some of the oldest crappie fishing secrets and have been handed down from father to son for years.

Guideline#1 Water clarity determines what kind of crappie fishing jig you want to use.

#1.a Look into the body of water you are fishing and if you can see 3-4 feet below the surface, the water is considered clear and you will want to use dark colored crappie jigs. Crappie can see very well in clear water so you need to spice up the movement of your jig in these water conditions. You need to “entice” the crappie to hit your crappie fishing jig.

#1.b if the water color is darker and you can’t see 3-4 feet below the surface use a lighter colored lure so the the crappie can see it. Make sure you ad this tip to your artificial crappie baits usage list.

#1.c Real dark and murky water means use some “flash” to make your crappie jig look like a minnow. Tie a 1/2 inch to 1 inch blade above the crappie fishing jig.

Guideline#2 I recommend you use a slip bobber, you can a good one to use is called “Mr crappie and you can purchase them at bass pro shop on-line. The slip bobber is unique because it will not come out of the water when you are jigging for crappie. this is a little used crappie fishing secret form the past.

Guideline#3 Place a small “split shot sinker” right above your slip bobber, this will control the depth of your crappie fishing jig. You want to work the depths between 4 and 8 feet. you can do this by readjusting the depth by sliding the “split shot sinker up or down the line until you get to your desired depth. Keep working these depths until you start catching crappie.

Guideline#4 “Pop” or jerk your slip bobber so it makes a 3 to 4 inch movement through the water, make sure you do this gently.

Guideline#5 If you do not get any bites, adjust the depth. The colder it gets, the deeper you will need to go. The warmer it is, the closer the fish will be to the surface. This is a little used fishing secret.

Located on the Texas and Louisiana state line on the Sabine River you will find the Toledo Bend River. It has a surface area of 186,000 acres and a depth of 110 feet making it the fifth largest man made lake found in the United Sates. Toledo Bend is also the largest and one of the most beautiful lakes found in the south. Its shoreline stretches approximately 1200 miles long.

The water is usually very clear in the middle and then it becomes murky as you go into the upper parts and near the edges of the water. Crappies are present in this area all year round, which is why it is considered an excellent place to go fishing.

Since Texas is on one side of the River and Louisiana is on the other it is important to know the fishing regulations of both states to ensure that you are abiding by all the rules. The regulations for catching crappie are different in both states and you will be expected to obey them completely.

Fishing Tips for This Area

Fishing at Toledo Bend is a great opportunity for anyone that loves to fish for and catch crappie. As mentioned above they can be found in this river all year long and the best way to fish year round for crappie is with jigs and minnows.

As with most species of fish the spawning season for the crappie is during the spring. They will be the most aggressive during this time than at any other time of the year.

During the spring you can find the crappie located throughout the grass lines in this lake. They are also found in the creeks and in the deep water near the coves. Look for them under brush and around similar structures found in the water. Vertical fishing with jigs and shiners is recommended when fishing for crappie in and around brush piles in the spring.

In the summer focus your efforts in the creek channels and fish in depths ranging between ten to fifteen feet deep. Shiners and jigs will still work very well when vertical fishing in and around the brush piles during the summer months.

During the fall the crappie will be moving out into the deeper water of the main river and leaving the creeks. In the early part of the fall you will get more action when crappie fishing along the northern end of the Toledo Bend River. The crappie will begin moving along the river channel southward as fall turns into winter and it starts to get colder.

In cold weather you get the best results fishing around the ledges and brush piles using shiners and jigs. However, the colder it gets you will have more luck with the jigs. The crappie will normally be between twelve to twenty feet deep during this time of year.

Anglers are drawn to the Toledo Bend River for the great crappie fishing it provides. You can find a huge population of black and white crappie in this water. Another thing that draws in the anglers is the limit of crappie you are allowed to keep.

Each person fishing for crappie in this area is allowed to catch up to fifty fish per trip. With the great success you will have fishing here it is not hard to reach your limit.

Old School Crappie Fishing Family Secrets

If you make the decision to go crappie fishing there are so many ways to make crappie rigs that catch crappie.You will need different crappie catching rigs for the different seasons of the and for different fishing situations. You will find 8 crappie fishing tips below that we feel will work for just about any crappie rigging situation you will face.We talk about using artificial crappie fishing jigs and using crappie fishing minnows. The best minnows to use are called “Missouri minnows”.

TIP#1 Use a “spin cast” reel fishing with a light weight graphite rod with 6-12# test line. (this is a bit more then most guys use.. but it works.

Tip#2 Purchase some “Cajun Red 6 -12lb test line for your crappie fishing rig.(you can use higher test ratings with this line because red is almost invisible to crappie in the water.)

TIP#3 Get some “Missouri minnows”, or the smallest minnows you can at the bait shop. You probably won’t catch as many crappie but if you have the wife and kids along it makes for a wonderful family outing.

Tip#4 Use crappie fishing jigs with the head weighing from 1/64″ oz up to 1/4 ounce, but no bigger.

TIP#5 Use crappie fishing jigs.

Tip#5a Use tube jigs: green, yellow, and white

Tip#5b Use the smallest artificial minnow jigs you can find, with black tops and silver belly. The tale should move and get a lot of action in the water.

Tip#5c Hair wrapped jig are hard to fine, but if you find one make sure you purchase it. They work great on your crappie fishing rig.

Tip#5d When you purchase jig heads look for yellow heads and black eyes. The tail shoud be black except for the tail should be yellow.

Tip#6 The colder the water gets the smaller the line test you should use. Also water can see better in colder water so use 4lb test line in colder water temperatures.

Tip#7 Use spring loaded floats (bobbers,corks) That can slide up and down the line so you can easily adjust your fishing depth.

Tip#8 Instead of using just one jig or hook on a line tie in 2 or three jigs about 10 inches apart. You can place a weight below the jigs, but if that doesn’t work put the weight above the jigs.
