How to Catch More Crappie in the Wintertime: Winter Crappie Fishing Tips
How to Catch More Crappie in the Wintertime: Winter Crappie Fishing Tips
Winter crappie fishing tips may help you to stand above the other anglers out there that struggle with crappie fishing during the colder months. Many fishermen, even experienced ones, believe you can not catch crappie anytime except the springtime. This is not a fact.
Crappie does spawn in the spring and are much easier to find in large quantities at this time, but the truth is crappie can be caught any time of the year. Perhaps the key to catching more crappie in the winter months would be to understand their seasonal habits and fish accordingly. Most importantly, know that fishing for crappie during this season may pose a challenge, but is well worth it!
When the weather begins to get warmer, crappie fish begin to migrate toward the shallows. Leaving their deeper water homes, they prepare to spawn. The timing and duration of the spawning will be different depending on the lake conditions, weather patterns, and current weather conditions.
Look for crappie during their migration, in structure such as piers, brush, and undergrowth. You will readily find them eager to munch on anything they can find because of their need for fast moving, to get to their destination.
When fishing in the late parts of winter and early spring, remember that the northern most sides of lakes and bodies of water tend to warm first, and most crappie will move to the warmer areas, and need to feed. Murky water also tends to heat faster than clear water, and your chances of getting a good catch in these types of areas is very good. Look at the layout of the lake or area you will be fishing. Where are the most ideal places for crappie to be at this moment?
In actuality, fishing for crappie during the winter months is the most predictable time of the year as far as fish behavior is concerned. During the cold time of the year, these fish will always be found in the deeper parts of the water. Using a depth finder and concentrating on the deepest areas is a great way to find the crappie for which you are looking.
The tendency for crappie to seek seclusion in structure might deviate during this time of the year. You can also find the crappie suspended in the water about midway, but looking for baitfish, such as shad, is a good way to locate the crappie you seek. With depth in fishing, tailor your fishing tackle, fishing line and rod to deeper waters. Be sure that you consider the importance of line strength here.

Are you an avid fisherman? Are you new to Crappie fishing or a long-time fan? Regardless of your experience level, there is a lot to learn about crappie fishing which can improve your skill and performance. It’s also very helpful to learn what other crappie fishermen have to say since everyone may have their own way of doing things but different situations may call for different fishing tactics to be successful.
Know Your Bait
Next on your list is to find out what type of bait you will be using so you know how to use it properly. Since crappie can see color, many fishermen decide to use colorful baits to attract them. Just remember that your fish’s sight can be hindered by water depth and other conditions.
Many professional fishermen like to use darker colors of red, green or orange when fishing for crappie in winter waters. Bright colors are also very helpful in the fall when it seems to many that crappie disappear completely.
Find Your Technique
When fishing for crappie, it’s going to be important to find your technique. When you get “in the groove” of your fishing technique, it will come more easily and all else will begin to fall into place. Sometimes low bottom fishing is the best way to go. Other times you need to fish in deep waters and with artificial baits or varying colors. There may be times when you want to fish with scented lures.
Remember once you find your technique to remain flexible. While there may be one particular way that’s worked for you in the past and that you feel most comfortable with, this doesn’t mean that is the only way that works. If you’re typical technique is not capturing you any fish, it may be time to open up to other ideas.
Weather/Season for Crappie Fishing
One of the most important steps to fishing for crappie is to know what season you are fishing in so you can adjust your fishing tactics accordingly. Depending on the season and the weather, your crappie fishing techniques will be different. In the winter time, the temperatures could be as low as 40 degrees. At these times, the crappie will be further to the bottom of the water. You should fish for them at areas of 18 or 20 to 40 feet deep for best results.
In fall it may seem that the crappie disappear completely. Many people feel this is the most difficult time to fish for crappie but it doesn’t mean it can’t be done. If you know where to search for them, you can find crappie even in the fall. Crappie are very elusive at this time of year and may be found in very shallow waters at one time and deep waters the next. Your best bet is to learn how to attract them out to where your bait is. Crappie fishing in fall will require slower fishing so they have more time to see the bait, using brighter colored baits to capture their attention and even using scented artificial baits.

Crappie Fishing Tips From A Pro

Many people wrongly think the only time you can catch a Crappie is during the spawn. Your dead wrong if you think that. I make a living catching crappie year round. While they may be the easiest to catch during the Spring spawn, they can also be caught at other times of the year. Sometimes better than during the Spring spawn. It’s called Crappie fishing, not Crappie catching!
The problem is that many fisherman think of only in terms of Spring fishing. Crappie are much like any other schooling fish and many of the same tactics that work on Bass, Walleye and White Bass work when Crappie fishing.
These fishing tips are here to help you extend your fishing season to the point you can catch fish year round.
My favorite times other than the spawn are the Fall and Winter months. Sometimes if the day heats up after a morning duck hunt, I’ll head out into the lake and find a school of Crappie hanging above a submerged creek bank or over submerged timber.
Most times of the year, I’ll find the fish out in the lake in 12 to 18 feet of water. I have caught them as deep as 25 feet during really cold or really hot spells. But day in and day out, 8 to 18 feet is where I’ll find Crappie.
When I’m after deep water fish holding over structure, I’ll use a 6 lb test line on a 7 foot light action spinning rod. This can have some obvious drawbacks if you hook into a big Striper or Catfish. Been there, done that!
If the fish are holding over a deep water break, I may go as light as a 6 foot graphite rod and 4lb test line. But beware! There are big bass and catfish lurking below!
If the water is a little murky or muddy, I like using a combination of bright and dark jigs. Like a two toned lure with a blaze orange head and black or brown body. Sometimes I’ll also add some sound to my baits by using a spinner blade or shot. Don’t get to loud with your sound, Crappie are spooky fish.
During early Summer mornings, I use a spider rig to find Crappie that aren’t schooled up. Once the Sun get’s up and the heat turns on, I use my fish locator to find schools of Crappie along deep water channels or over suspended timber.
Another good tactic to find scattered fish is suspending a jig from a slip float rig. Set out several rods, I like to use 6 or more, and drift along the lake until you start picking up fish.
Catchng these tasty fish isn’t hard. You just have to change tactics and get out of spawn mode. Just remember, Crappie have to eat year round. You just need to be there when they get hungry and give them what they want to eat!
Year round Crappie fishing can be a blast. Challenging at times, yes. Is it worth it? When there’s ice on the window sill and sleet is pelting the window and you’re sitting at the Kitchen table downing some fresh caught golden brown filets…yeah it’s worth it!
