Fall Crappie Fishing Techniques

Many anglers start packing up their rods and reels and begin storing them away in the fall. This is a shame because crappie fishing can be just as productive in the fall as it is in the spring.
In fact, it can even be more fun and productive because there are fewer people out on the lakes and rivers making noise and scaring off the crappie. This means fewer distractions, less competition and better results for each fishing trip.
One thing that discourages anglers from fishing for crappie in the fall is the fact that they are more scattered out during this time of year than at any other time. This makes them a little harder to find. They are also more unpredictable so you may have to work a little harder but this just makes it more of a challenge and more rewarding.
In the fall the water temperature eventually becomes the same at all depths and the oxygen levels are higher so the crappie could be at any depth at any given time. This makes finding the crappie the hardest thing for the crappie fisherman to do.
However, don’t let this discourage you. With a few fall crappie fishing techniques you can increase the number of crappie that you reel in during any fishing trip.
Techniques for Fall Crappie Fishing
Fall crappie fishing techniques include a variety of things such as knowing what types of baits work the best. Everyone will agree that crappies are most attracted to minnows. In the fall when they are preparing for the long winter months ahead they will be searching for this food source.
When using artificial lures it is suggested that you stay under three inches in length. In most areas a one or two inch artificial minnow would work the best. You can also catch crappie with worms and crayfish. If you do use live bait make sure you keep it in a cooler and try to keep them as lively as possible for the best results.
You can catch crappie anytime during the day or night but the most productive times are usually at night. This is because the fish feed more aggressively during the late evening to early morning hours. Using an artificial light to draw the crappie to your position is a great technique used for night fishing.
The light attracts insects and bait fish that will in turn attract the crappie and draw them in your direction.
If you are fishing in an area where the visibility is low you can receive the best results with lures that make sound. These will cause vibrations in the water that will attract the crappie or you can use something with a strong odor.
When fishing in clear water crappie plugs, small jigs, bladebaits and spoons work very well. As a general rule jigs and minnows are normally the best to use. Sometimes combining these two together will attract the crappie much faster than using them alone, especially in the fall.

Crappie Fishing Techniques: Trolling for Crappie
There is more than one way to catch crappie fish. One of the most potentially effective methods is trolling for crappie. While several variations of trolling exist, it frequently involves drawing a baited line through a body of water, while the crappie fisherman is situated in a moving boat. However, failing to troll properly can limit the experience to a simple boat ride. Here are some crappie fishing techniques to make your crappie trolling as successful as possible:
Step 1: Start with the right equipment
If you have a boat for trolling, then you are ready to roll (float, actually). You should also equip the boat with a trolling motor that allows you to move as slowly as possible. When selecting crappie jigs, choose those with red heads and either yellow or white bodies. Additionally, use jigs of varying weights. The reason is that the weights of the crappie jigs will dictate how deep your trolling will be. Here is another of the best crappie fishing tips: ideally you should troll multiple crappie rigs simultaneously, and at a variety of depths – this is called spider rigging.
Step 2: Find the perfect trolling location
To catch crappies when trolling, it is important for you to think like crappies. Basically, crappies are fans of structures. Thus, you should search for areas where crappies could conceal themselves, quickly catch smaller fishes, and then return to their hiding locations. Such areas include:
• stump areas
• sunken wreak areas
• rock points
To take a more scientific approach, here is one of the top crappie fishing techniques: use
a topographical map to locate potential crappie hiding places.
Step 3: Catch your first crappie
Your first objective once you start the boat’s motor is to catch your first crappie. Make sure to use minnow as live bait. Avert drowning the minnow by using one of several good crappie fishing tips: bait the hook by poking the bait through the bottom of the fish’s mouth, and to the top of its mouth.
Step 4: Prepare your first crappie as a scout fish
After you have caught your first crappie, you can use it as a “scout fish” to locate the fish’s school (but first verify that scout fishes are legal in your state). Hopefully school will soon be out (and into your boat!) by using the right crappie fishing techniques. Hook the back of the crappie, but avoid placing the hook too deep into the fish! Make sure that the crappie is at the end of roughly 10 feet of fishing line, and then place a bobber at the opposite end of the line.
Step 5: Fish with the scout fish
Now the fun begins! Start trolling with the scout fish, and keep an eye on the bobber. It is important to keep an ample distance from the scout fish, to prevent the school of crappie from spotting you. Let the scout fish lead you to its abode. While keeping your distance, fish an area until you have fished out the location.
Step 6: Make your map and then move on
Here is another of the top crappie fishing tips. After fishing out an area, note the section on your trusty topographical map or GPS. This will make the tools assets for future crappie fishing in that area.
