Fishing is held as one of the most popular outdoor activities in Alabama. The Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division is in charge of managing, protecting, and enhancing all freshwater resources in the state.
The resources available include 47 reservoirs that cover over 551,220 acres total, 23 public fishing lakes, and over 77,000 miles of rivers, streams, and deltas.
Types of Crappie in Alabama Waters
The diversity of waters available in Alabama greatly diversifies the types of fish found in these waters.
When Crappie fishing, the area in which you are fishing dictates the type of Crappie you will be able to catch. Both Black Crappie and White Crappie can be found in Alabama, though the Black Crappie are much more predominate.
Hybrid crappie can also be found in Alabama rivers, though they are somewhat rare.
The State Record for Black Crappie is 4 pounds, 5 ounces. Black Crappie prefer water temperatures of 68 to 72 Degrees, and deeper, slow moving waters.
Rules and Regulations
When fishing for Crappie in Alabama waters, you must follow certain rules and regulations. While these rules can change by the area in which you are in, generally they remain close to the same.
You can only possess a total of 30 Crappie (Black or White) per fishing trip.
The typical required length for kept Crappie is 9 inches in all waters that are larger then 500 acres. All of the states public lakes are exempt from this rule, along with the Chattahoochee River, Impoundments, tributaries, and the Bear Creek Reservoir. Crappie have to be a minimum of 10 inches when caught from the Weiss Reservoir.
Alabama Crappie Fishing Hot Spots
LAKE EUFAULA- While most lakes in the area have Crappie ranging in age of 1-6 years old, Lake Eufaula has Crappie as old as 10 years. The population of this lake is so high that it is likely that Crappie will die of old age rather then being caught. This is really surprising because Lake Eufaula does not place a restriction on the size or amount of Crappie you can keep from the water.
This may be because fisherman in the area only seem to target Crappie during certain parts of the year. During the other times, the fish are free to roam and flourish without the chance of being caught.
Another cause for the abundance of slabs in Eufaula is the habitat the impoundment provides. Plenty of fairly shallow water is available off the old Chattahoochee River channels. Lake Eufaula offers has a high fertility rate, and provides plenty of adequate areas for Crappies to spawn in.

Minnesota Lake Fishing Tips

Fishing in Minnesota’s lakes is a favorite summer past time for many people. Before you head out on your fishing adventure, there are a few things to remember and a few tips to soak up. To get the most out of your fishing trip, check out these helpful hints.

Even before you head out on the water, make sure your boat is equipped for a fishing trip. Grab your life jackets, safety equipment, fishing poles, fishing net, bait and tackle box, sunscreen, snacks and beverages to ensure maximum time spent out on the lake. It might also be helpful to look up what kinds of fish are popular in the lake you are fishing on to adjust your fishing gear accordingly.

While fishing can be an exciting sport, it does require a lot of patience. Not every fishing trip will result in tons of fish being caught and when you do catch a fish, it might be after hours of repeated casting and reeling in. Be prepared to spend some time out on the lake to really get the whole fishing experience.

Even though catching a fish is great, part of fishing is the time spent enjoying the experience. Sitting in a boat, hearing the sound of the waves against the boat, enjoying the openness of being on the water is something everyone should experience, regardless of whether or not they catch a fish. So when you go fishing, enjoy the small stuff so that you can truly remember your fishing experience fondly.

When you are ready to do some crappie fishing in Illinois, you will find that there are many great options open to you. People do find that Illinois is a great place to fish for crappie and when you want to make sure that you have the best spots around, just check out the list below and see what it can do for you!

Lake Decatue
This lake is found in the county of Macon, and it is just south of Decatur. It can produce some huge crappie and just a few years ago, a 19 inch crappie was measured by a conservation police officer. There are a large number of the fish in this lake and while of course the smaller fish are more numerous, the fishing pressure in this area is relatively low.

Mill Creek Lake
This lake is on the small side at 811 acres and it is located in Clark county. You need a county issued boat permit to launch in this lake, but it is considered to be worth it. This lake can produce a fair number of well-sized crappies and widely considered to be a great spot.

Lake Mattoon
Lake Matoon is located near the town of Mattoon to the south and one thing that many serious crappie fishers will like is that there is no horsepower limitations out there on the lake. It is important to remember that it does require a city permit to launch a bot though. It is important to remember that the lake has no length limit, but there is a request that fishermen use their own judgment to ensure the quality of the fishing there.

Lake Shelbyville
This lake lies on an 11,000 acre reserve that is located southeast of Decatur. There are six small craft launch facilities and you will find that the quality of fish that you can catch there is quite high. There has been a conscious management of creel and length limits in order to do so. This is a great place to go if you happen to be in the area.

Lake Taylorville
When you are looking for a steady lake with great crappie fishing in Christian County, head to Lake Taylorville. There are no motor restrictions and there are multiple public ramp access areas. It manages to maintain a relatively stable crappie population, though the quality tends to be a bit lower than the surrounding areas.

Sangchris Lake
Make sure that you check out Sangchris Lake between Christian and Sangamon Counties as well. The lake has some very high quality crappie fishing, but remember that there is a 25 horsepower motor limit and a ten inch minimum length requirement.

When you are thinking about making sure that you can pull in the crappie that you love, you will find that you should take a moment to consider what the lakes of Illinois have to offer. There are so many different options available to you here, so take a moment and see which one suits you!

If you are looking for a great fishing destination, then you really need to look no farther than the great state of Tennessee. This state provides incredible fishing opportunities whether you’re looking for walleyes or catfish the size of your sports car. There are literally millions of acres of water for you to scratch your angling itch on. So if you want to fish, then head to Tennessee and try out a few of the lakes listed here!

J. Percy Priest lake is governed by the Nashville District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and offers a lot of different things to do, no matter what it is that you happen to want. You can either fish, camp, hunt, or anything that you really want to do. The crappies are dense in this lake, and as with any other lake you will want to look for them either in the shallows or near floating timber because this is generally where crappies will tend to live or hang out.

Lake Barkley is also a great place to visit if you are into the whole fishing thing. It was impounded by the Army Corps of Engineers in 166, and is quite close to the Cumberland River in Kentucky. Lake Barkley forms one of the greatest recreational freshwater complexes in the United States, an features a lot of different activities which you can do either by yourself, or with your family. You can either take a small one man boat out, or you can go all out with a huge pontoon boat; whichever sounds best for you!

Nickajack Damn is yet another great place to go for crappie fishing, as it is filled with fish, and is thirty miles west of Chattanooga. It was built to replace Hales Bar Dam which was broken and springing leaks like there was no tomorrow. You can still see the Hales Bar Damn located above the lake, and this is a perfect place to fish. Make sure that you seek out the shallow areas of the lake if crappies are what you seek. Also remember that crappies look for warm water, and as such that is what you should look for.

Old Hickory lake is decent as well, it is actually a Reservoir in the northern part of Tennessee, which is formed by the Old Hickory Lake Damn on the Cumberland River. It is about twenty five miles upstream from Nashville, and the city of Hendersonville is on its north shoreline. The lake is full of crappie, and you will have a great time fishing here.

South Holston Lake is good as well, but it is a little odd. Most of the reservoir is located within Tennesee, but there is a huge part of it that is located in Virginia. If you are fishing on the Tennessee side, then you need a license from Tennessee, but if you are fishing on the Virginia side, then you need a Virginia license because there is no reciprocal license between the two states. This should in no way discourage you from fishing in this lake as it is a great place to fish for crappie.

Fishing is a favorite pastime for many people. In the beginning fishing was used for food and basic survival. Today it is still used for that but it is more used for sport than anything else. There are thousands of people who will go out into the wilderness or out onto the middle of a lake to try their luck with the rod and reel. It doesn’t matter what it is they fish for because all anglers have a preference. It could be bass, carp, walleye, or even blue gill if they are so inclined. One thing that many fishermen go for, and is used in many tournaments, is the Crappie. It is a great thing to fish for, but where can you find them? What lakes are they located in?

In Durham north Carolina there is a lake called Falls Lake. It is man-made and it is rather large. This lake was created by the US Army in order to control flood waters, as well as to provide water to the surrounding communities. There are areas around the edge of this lake that provide good cover for crappies such as heavily wooded areas, and dingy water that stays warmer than the rest of the lake. Crappies love warm water, so there is no reason to believe that they will go incredibly deep.

Kerr Lake, also known as Buggs Island, is additionally a great place to catch Crappie. It too is owned by the Army Corps of Engineers, and because it borders Virginia and North Carolina, a license from either state will be valid throughout the entire lake, regardless of where you happen to be fishing. That definitely cuts down on costs!

Apalachia Reservoir is a great place to fish for Crappie. It is a great place for all types of different activities like fishing, hiking, and even camping. You will find that it is a very quiet place with virtually no private residences flanking the shoreline, and absolutely no commercialized areas. It is always very clean because the Forest Services takes care of the surrounding land, and as such you should have no trouble catching your fill of crappie.

High Rock Lake is also a great place for crappie fishing. It may be a little bit noisy for your tastes because the lake is somewhat commercialized. It has been advertised as a family location, meaning that you will find tons of children there as well as families. There are boats to rent, and even campsites. If you can find a nice quiet place then there is a high probability that the crappies will practically come to you, but no one said that it would be easy.

You can also sample the fish of Lake Mattamuskeet which is actually the largest natural lake in the state of North Carolina, and is actually a wetlands depression. The lake is not fed by any underground springs, and is about five feet below sea level. The lake itself is filled with crappie, and as usually you will find them in the more shallow areas of the lake.

Mississippi is a state located in the southern US, and is named for the river of the same name which is on its west. There are many forests in this state, as well as a plethora of lakes that are all good for fishing. You will find that you can catch many fish there including bass, and even the much loved crappie that you hear so often referenced by anglers. If you are interested in catching crappie, then you have definitely come to the right place, and we will be more than happy to fill you in on the best places to catch crappie with in the state.

One place that you definitely need to check out is Sardis Lake, which is located along the Tallahatchie river. This lake is renowned for the sand beaches and the many different places to fish. It also has a swimming pool, rec hall, and even a golf course. If you ever get bored with the crappie fishing, then you can definitely find something else to entertain yourself while you are there!

Okatibbee Lake features an amazing 11,000 acres as well as excellent fishing opportunities. There are infinite fishing opportunities, so there is no doubt that you will have a lot of fun on this beautiful lake!

Located at the center of Mississippi is Enid Reservoir. This lake is stocked with all the fish that you could ever need, and of course there are crappie there. To be honest there aren’t many man made lakes that aren’t stocked with crappie, and this one is no exception. That said you will have lots of fun on this 28,000 acre body of water, particularly if you are partial to the rod and reel.

The Ross R. Barnett Reservoir was named for the 52nd Governor of Mississipi, who incidentally shares the exact same name. This has 105 miles of shoreline and limitless fishing opportunities. As always anyone who wants to explore those opportunities should really consult with a guide so that they will be able to locate the best spots for fishing, as well as being able to keep their bearings.

The Jamie Whitten Lock & Dam is a very interesting lake, as it is actually ten different channel locks that create ten individual lakes. The dam is well stocked and you will find that there is no limit if fish whatsoever. Angle to your heart’s content, because this is one of the greatest sports in the entire state. Just remember to take someone with you, and definitely back some protective gear because it is a rather large lake.

Louisiana is definitely a great state to visit. It has a lot of wildlife, and it is also very interesting when you consider that it is the only state that is still divided into Parishes. If you ever pass through this state, whether intentionally or unintentionally, then you need to try out some of the many fishing opportunities on one or more of their many lakes.

Catahoula Lake is 19,000 acres of pure fishing fun located in the center of Louisiana, and fifteen miles southwest of Jonesville Los Angeles. This is the largest natural freshwater body in the state, and its shallow areas make it perfect for crappies. If crappies are your thing then it would definitely be a bad idea to miss out on fishing in this great lake. Keep in mind however that it is a sightseeing area, so you may have to go quite a bit out of the way to find a quiet spot.

Calcasieu lake is also a great place to fish, with it’s swift waters and sandy bottom. Normally you will have to fish off of the embankments close to bridges unless you happen to have a boat. The fishing in this lake, as you will soon find out, is best when the water level is lowering, because there are more crappies making themselves present, as well as other fish if you are so inclined. There are many access points that you can take advantage of, so if one is full them keep driving, you’re bound to find another at some point.

North of Boyce is Lake Rodemacher, which is open to just about anything including boating and fishing. Because it is owned by the CLECO and is under their jurisdiction, you will need to get a permit from them in order to actually use this lake. While only daytime fishing is permitted, the lake is home to a lot of different crappies which you may fish for to your hearts content. It has many other fish, but crappies are the main thing that you will probably be seeking out. The lake also has two good boat ramps on both the west and south sides.

Vernon Lake is perfect for crappie fishing, because the lake itself is in part wooded. It has a lot of dead timber floating, which crappies tend to gather around. It will make navigation with a boat a little bit tricky, but if you are really determined to catch those crappie then you won’t let this bother you one bit.

Indian Creek Reservoir isn’t just a great fishing destination, it is also a great place to go on a family getaway. It has room for fishing, swimming, hiking, and even picnics. The lake is full of crappies for you to catch, and you can even use a boat on this lake as there is a decent launching point on the lake. This is definitely one that you don’t want to miss, especially if you are traveling with your family.

Kentucky is without a doubt one of the greatest places to fish in the United States. From the shore fishing, to the boating on the mighty Cumberland River, there is no doubt something for everyone in this great state which is located just south of Ohio. You will find bait stores everywhere, and if you need a good boat you are certain to find that as well; and you won’t have to look very hard either. Many people go to Kentucky for fishing tournaments or for recreational fishing. It is a great family vacation spot, or a place to be alone. Kentucky truly is a multi-purpose state, and if you wish to angle for the greatest crappie in the state, then you would be wise to check out the following locations.

Though many people did not like the idea, Cumberland Lake was eventually created, drowning many communities and schools. Regardless, it has drawn a lot of tourism for the county as well as immeasurable amounts of money. There are so many different things to do on this lake whether you want to ski, float, or go house boating. The lake is also filled with tons of different fish including crappies. If you want crappies then it would be best to stay near the shallows or close to floating timber as these are the places that crappies are most likely to hide.

Laurel River Lake is also a good place to go fishing for crappie. This lake is actually within the Daniel Boone National Forest and only a few miles off of Lake Cumberland. It is among the deeper Kentucky lakes and features a lot of different activities. It has places for hiking, picnics, and all kinds of things that you would have to go there to find out about. One of its other activities is scuba diving, so you would be ill minded to miss out on this great opportunity for both crappie fishing as well as entertainment for your entire family if you are traveling with them.

Rough River Lake is a nicely designed multi-purpose lake, having been built by the Army Corps of Engineers to help with flooding as well as water supply. Since then the lake has done a great job of providing many different recreational activities including boating, fishing, and even hunting. This does not mean it is a good idea to go hunting on the lake with a firearm, but during hunting season you are more than welcome to try hunting the game the gathers around the body of water. The crappie fishing here is especially good as well.

Taylorsville Lake Park is a great place to visit, you can fish for just about anything there including bass, crappie, and bluegill. There isn’t much sport in bluegill but to each his own as they say. The lake is also very close to Louisville, so if you want to fish for crappie but don’t want to be incredibly far from civilization, this is definitely a great lake to visit.

Yatesville is a great place to visit too. This lake has tons of things to do including boating, jet skiing, or fishing. The lake is full of crappies, and you won’t go home empty handed from this lake!

Indiana has a whole lot of places where you can fish for crappie with no trouble whatsoever so long as you have a valid fishing license and a some time to get out on the lake. Here are some of the best lakes for crappie fishing in Indiana.

One place that you might want to visit is Lake Monroe. The water level is normally around five hundred feet which gives plenty of room for all types of fish. Currently this is a great place for catching crappie, as there are currently 14-16 inch crappies being caught all over. As always make sure you stick near driftwood because this is where the crappies love to hide!

Lake Freeman is located near the City of Carroll Indiana with a shoreline of about fifty miles. The maximum depth is about forty feet, meaning that it is a lot friendlier toward crappies than some other lakes. This lake is man-made, and features many different species of fish including channel catfish, largemouth bass, white bass, and white crappie. There are not any black crappies in this lake but for some people that really is not such a loss.

In the state of Indiana there are two large natural lakes, and one of them is known as Lake Maxinkuckee. It covers an area of 1,864 acres and is very close to the town of Culver. The average depth of this lake is twenty four feet or seven meters, making it not so deep for crappie. As such it is not uncommon for people to practice ice fishing on this lake often catching many different types of fish.

Cecil M. Harden Lake, which is also regarded as Raccoon lake is over 2,000 acres in width, and is great for either one person to visit, or an entire family. If you get tired of fishing for crappie then you can feel free to enjoy some of the other activities that are offered at this wonderful vacation spot which include archery, basketball, and even volleyball. This is definitely a multi-purpose park, so you would do well to take a look at it if you are visiting Indiana.

The Mississinewa Reservoir is a tributary of the Wabach River. It is about one hundred miles long and has a heavy history in the United States. It was actually occupied by an Indian chief back when such things are still a reality, and the river was named by those ancient inhabitants, its name meaning “falling water”. Many battles were fought in this area, and now you can fight the legendary battle of the crappie with your rod and reel.
